Known for his passion and intensely communicative style, Barcelona-born conductor Josep Caballé-Domenech galvanizes musicians and audiences alike. Eliciting a consistently beautiful and lush sound from the orchestra, his performances have been hailed throughout Europe, Scandinavia and, most recently, Japan.
Among the orchestras with which he has appeared are the Barcelona Symphony, Bogota Philharmonic (Colombia), Borusan Philharmonic (Istanbul), Czech Philharmonic, Munich Radio Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Real Filarmonia (Galicia), Royal Philharmonic (London), Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony, WDR/Cologne and the Zurich Tonhalle. Mr. Caballé-Domenech was principal guest conductor of the Norrköping Symphony from 2005-07, and has appeared several times as guest conductor of the Aspen Festival Orchestra at the invitation of David Zinman.
Highlights of Mr. Caballé-Domenech’s 2008-09 season were debuts with the Aalborg Symphony, the Brno Philharmonic, the Tonkünstlerorchester in Vienna, as well as return engagements to the Barcelona Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, and two weeks with the Trondheim Symphony.
Equally at home in opera, Mr. Caballé-Domenech made his debut at Barcelona’s Liceu conducting performances of Mozart’s Cosě fan tutti. Subsequent productions at the Liceu include Haydn’s Il mondo della luna, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amor, Granados’s Maria del Carmen, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. He has also led Liceu productions at the Savonlinna Festival and at La Fenice in Venice. Mr. Caballé-Domenech has conducted Le nozze di Figaro at both the Stuttgart State Opera and the Vienna Volksoper and La Bohčme at Lisbon’s Teatro Sao Carlo. During the 2008-09 season he conducted the world premiere of a new opera by E. Palomer at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and returned to the Vienna Volksoper to lead productions of both Tosca and Carmen.
Born into a family of musicians, Josep Caballé-Domenech studied piano, violin, voice and percussion. He studied conducting at the University of Music and Scenic Arts in Vienna and at the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen with David Zinman, Jorma Panula and Sergiu Comissiona, where he also received the Aspen Prize. Mr. Caballé-Domenech was named Sir Colin Davis Protégé in the inaugural cycle of Rolex’s Mentor/Protégé Arts Initiative in 2002.
