Ticket & Transportation Scholarship Application

now available! Available for public schools only. Preference will be given to Title I schools and on a first come, first serve basis.

All programs are 50 minutes in length and are held at Trinity University’s Laurie Auditorium. Concerts start at 9:45 am and 11:10 am.

The San Antonio Symphony Young People’s Concert Series is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

What is a Young People’s Concerts?
The San Antonio Symphony’s Young People’s Concerts have introduced youth to live orchestral music since 1943. The Symphony firmly believes that music is a very important component of a child’s growth and development. Programs are designed to meet the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives in fine arts and a core subject area. Geared towards third, fourth, and fifth grade students, YPC’s engage students with carefully planned and highly-educational programs of music and lecture.

The interdisciplinary connection of our 2011-2012 YPC series was Reading. Through the series, Adventures of Reading in Music!, the Symphony explored a wide-variety of topics related to reading, such as music inspired by literature and relationships between writing forms and styles and their musical counterparts. We are excited to announce the co-curricular theme for the 2012-2013 YPC Series: History and Geography. There will be a total of 18 concerts annually with an interactive component to each one. A comprehensive Teacher’s Guide and a CD of concert selections are made available in advance to prepare students for each visit.

Approximately 28,000 students attended the 2011-2012 Young People’s Concerts, of those almost 20,000 came from public schools and over 50% of those students come from low income and Title 1 schools, are of a minority background, and considered “at risk.” The Symphony makes a particular effort to reach out to these students because many national studies emphasize the effect music can have on a child’s education—better grades, lower dropout rates, and well-rounded social skills. The Symphony recognizes that transportation costs and the price for admission are significant obstacles schools face in order to benefit from our educational programs. The Symphony addresses these problems by providing over $100,000 in scholarship funding to public schools each year, thanks to our generous donors. Scholarships cover 100% of the cost of tickets and also partial transportation costs to Young People’s Concerts for low-income and Title 1 schools, and many other schools that otherwise would not be able to attend.
